So, Avatar didn’t win Best Picture. Makes perfect sense.
A film without a good story doesn’t deserve an Oscar nod. Simple as that.

What about Hurt Locker?  It was good, but not that good. Lucky win with a weak playing field.
And I have seen much better war films not winning Best Picture:Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan, probably the most ridiculous result of all time!

Other than sympathy votes for a divorcee director, the (alien-on-alien) sex scene in Avatar was probably the biggest turnoff for the female voters in the Academy… not only the guy went right to sleep after the supposedly fantastic sex (not shown on screen, but implied) with his alien girlfriend, he left his alien body and went to hang out with his human buddies, had a nice breakfast in the morning before heading back!

Isn’t that the ultimate insult to the Hollywood feminists?

Visually stunning but…

I finally saw the IMAX 3D version of Avatar last night… still a full house after 3 months, not to mention it was a 10pm show on a cold Wednesday night!!  I should’ve caught the trend and buy IMAX stock last year…

Anyhoo, was it as good as some people say, and possibly winning the Best Picture at the Oscars?  My answer is a resounding NO:
1) The plot sucks, I read in an interview where James Cameron stated it’s a love story in essence… well, if that was the intention, this love story was nowhere close to the one in Titanic;
2) The elements seemed very familiar mid way thru the movie… and then it clicked… Avatar more or less "borrowed" themes and items from various Hayao Miyazaki’s animated films!

Regardless, it’s still quite an achievement, I guess, visually stunning as the CG blends in seamlessly with the real-life actors.
And the big IMAX screen plus 3D helped a lot as well. Technically, Avatar will have an impact similar to Star Wars 30+ years ago.

Oscar Best Picture?  Perhaps. Likely.
But it won’t get my vote for sure.

P.S. I wonder if HK people can relate better to the story with the recent debate on high-speed rail vs protecting a small farm village…
