Happy Chinese New Year, everybody!
I think we are off to a great start this year already as Liverpool beat Barcelona at Nou Camp, 2-1!!!!

I was going to write more on the match (Bellamy might have swung a golf club at Riise, but the troublemaker set up the winning goal for his teammate) but the sight of Al Gore in Oscars is just making me sick… yes, I’m watching the Oscars and I’m sorry to say that Ellen DeGeneres is probably one of the worst hosts ever. So boring.

 

And I just feel equally, if not more, sorry for all the people who watched Gore’s documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” and took all the lies as truths. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for making the air cleaner. And I think we should do more to protect the environment. But to scare people into making profound changes that will put millions of jobs in jeopardy, and will ensure a global recession… that’s totally irresponsible!

 

I just question if fighting global warming should be the number one priority… a lot more resources should be put into fighting AIDS, Alzheimer’s or even curable disease like Malaria (which is killing one and three million deaths annually).

 

In any case, fighting global warming seems to be the hip thing now. Just don’t get carry away, folks.

 

Anyway, it’s nice to see Jodie Foster back on the red carpet. Gwyneth Paltrow and Naomi Watts are both very lovely. And Nicole Kidman is stunningly beautiful as always!

 

Oh, by the way, “Infernal Affair” is NOT a Japanese film (announced when best adapted screenplay was awarded). It’s made in Hong Kong!  I love Hong Kong!!

I had no idea candy/chocolate companies are so evil (at least the Japanese ones?)!!  As if they didn’t make enough money off poor children on Halloween and helpless ladies on Valentine’s Day: the industry came up with a "White Day", one month after Valentine’s Day on March 14th. Only this time, the lucky gentlemen who received chocolate on Feb 14th will return the favour and give candy/choco to the ladies.

 

I would suggest dental associations around the globe should abandon all the commercial endorsements for Oral-B etc. and concentrate on a more aggressive effort to remove all candy/choco in the world… much like the anti-smoking movement… or similar to what People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is doing to fur-wearing ladies! (Note: I saw a funny commercial: did you know from July 1998 through December 2005, PETA killed over 14400 dogs, cats, and other "companion animals."? http://www.petakillsanimals.com/)

 

Let’s gather some dentists around to burn up the M&M’s mascots in front of the Parliament!!

I’ll get the job done!

Lost in Translation

By announcing his candidacy for the post of Chief Executive (CE), Donald Tsang officially ensured us another 5 years of non-sense in Hong Kong. (Note: It’s really not an election because the new CE would be selected by 800 selective committee members dominated by pro-Communist and business sector, he is sure to continue his position for five more years even though there is another candidate, Alan Leong, to compete with him this time. In essence, he was handpicked by the Communists in Beijing to be the CE thru 2012 two years ago.)

 

Along with his announcement, he revealed his campaign slogan:
Cantonese – "我會做好呢份工!"
English – "I’ll get the job done!"

 

I believe many people had their jaws opened, speechlessly in disbelief… did he just say that?  That’s the vision from the Chief Executive??

 

There are 2 ways to interpret this:
1) Lost in Translation (btw, a wonderful movie directed by Sofia Coppola): the sentence originated from the English side and whoever did the translation was dead set on flexing his mother tongue Cantonese skills. I’m no expert in translation but "the job" here means a task or a project, rather than a post or an occupation. So, a better translation would be: I’ll get the job done/我搞得掂. And what would that task be?  Dismantle the democratic movement?  Suppress the demand of universal suffrage?  That’s open to interpretation.
2) It’s only a job: He really views being the leader of Hong Kong as just another salaried job. Which begs the question: who is the employer?  Is he looking after the interests of Communists or HK people?

I really hope he will cut back on the silly rhetoric. From "Strong Governance/強政勵治" to "Drinks Hong Kong water, has Hong Kong blood/喝的是香港水,心裏流的是香港血", this is getting worse… speaking almost like a Communist, just give me the creeps every time he speaks.
